Здрáвствуйте! Меня́ зову́т Антони́на. Э́то подка́ст Slow Russian, ваш ти́хий уголо́к для пра́ктики ру́сского языка́. Сегóдня нáша тéма: «День в ую́тном кафé». Давáйте начнём!

Днём я люблю́ выхóдить из дóма и гуля́ть по гóроду. Моё люби́мое мéсто: небольшóе и ти́хое кафé недалекó от пáрка. Там всегдá прия́тная атмосфéра. В кофéйне пáхнет свéжим кóфе и вы́печкой. Игрáет ти́хая му́зыка. Мой люби́мый стóлик нахóдится окóло окнá.

Я подходжу́ к бáру и говорю́: «Здрáвствуйте! Мне, пожáлуйста, капучи́но и круассáн». Бари́ста улыбáется и готóвит мой закáз. Черéз пять мину́т я беру́ чáшку, тёплый круассáн и сажу́сь за стóлик óколо окнá.

In this third lesson, we will learn how to identify the gender of Russian nouns, use personal pronouns (он, она́, оно́), and master demonstratives (э́тот / то́т).

Grammar Note 1: The Gender of Nouns

In Russian, every noun belongs to one of three genders based on its ending letter:

Vocabulary: Food & Drinks

Masculine (он):

• со́к — juice

• ча́й — tea

• круасса́н — croissant

• ко́фе — coffee (exception)

Feminine (она́):

• вода́ — water

• пи́цца — pizza

• па́ста — pasta

• таре́лка — plate

• ча́шка — cup

Neuter (оно́):

• я́блоко — apple

• моро́женое — ice cream

• капучи́но — cappuccino

• вино́ — wine

When learning new Russian words, always pay attention to their endings and gender, and try to make simple sentences with them.

Grammar Note 2: "It" in Russian

In English, all objects are “it”. In Russian, “it” depends on the noun’s gender:

Examples in Dialogue:

• — Где со́к? — Вот он. (Where is the juice? — Here it is.)

• — Где ча́шка? — Вот она́. (Where is the cup? — Here it is.)

• — Где я́блоко? — Вот оно́. (Where is the apple? — Here it is.)

Grammar Note 3: This & That

Demonstrative pronouns “this” and “that” also match the gender of the noun:

Practice Sentences:

• Э́тот со́к холо́дный. (This juice is cold.)

• То́т со́к вку́сный. (That juice is tasty.)

• Э́та ча́шка больша́я. (This cup is big.)

• Та́ пи́цца горя́чая. (That pizza is hot.)

• Э́то моро́женое вку́сное. (This ice cream is tasty.)

• То́ я́блоко сла́дкое. (That apple is sweet.)

Useful Everyday Phrases

Here are essential phrases for ordering and polite daily conversation:

• — Да́йте, пожа́луйста, со́к. (Give me juice, please.)

• — Ско́лько э́то сто́ит? (How much is this?)

• — Прия́тного аппети́та! (Enjoy your meal!)

• — Э́то о́чень вку́сно! (This is very tasty!)

• — Спаси́бо! (Thank you!)

• — Пожа́луйста! / Не́ за что! (You’re welcome! / Not at all!)

Я о́чень люблю́ у́тро. Для меня́ э́то са́мое люби́мое вре́мя дня. Я просыпа́юсь ра́но, когда́ на у́лице ещё тишина́ и ма́ло люде́й. В ко́мнате свежо́ и ти́хо. Я не беру́ телефо́н и не чита́ю но́вости. Пе́рвые мину́ты дня я хочу́ провести́ споко́йно.

Я ме́дленно встаю́ с крова́ти и открыва́ю окно́. Я люблю́ слу́шать, как пою́т пти́цы, и дыша́ть све́жим во́здухом. Э́то даёт мне си́лы и хоро́шее настрое́ние.

In this second lesson, we will learn how to identify everyday objects and people, use essential pronouns, ask simple questions, and navigate polite everyday interactions. Each lesson in this series is accompanied by a YouTube video to help you train your listening skills and practice pronunciation.

Asking “Who is this?” & “What is this?”

In Russian, asking about people vs. objects uses two distinct question words, but the pointer word это (this/these) stays exactly the same:

• Кто это? — Who is this? (Used for people)

  • Это Антон. — This is Anton.

• Что это? — What is this? (Used for inanimate objects)

  • Это ноутбук. — This is a laptop.

Introducing Others & Stating Occupations

When describing someone’s profession or role, remember our core rule: there is no verb “to be” (am, is, are) in the present tense in Russian. You simply state the person/pronoun and their role back-to-back:

• Это Анна. Она учитель. — This is Anna. She is a teacher.

• Я студент. — I am a student.

• Вы учитель? — Are you a teacher?

• Да, я учитель. — Yes, I am a teacher. / Нет, я студент. — No, I am a student.

Everyday Objects

When pointing out objects around you or right in front of you, use Что это? to ask what something is, or Вот (Here is / Here are) to show where an object is located:

• Что это? — What is this?

• Это телефон. — This is a phone.

• Это книга. — This is a book.

• Вот книга. — Here is the book.

Essential Survival Phrases

To keep a conversation flowing or get help when you don’t understand something, keep these polite phrases handy:

• Извините! — Excuse me! / Sorry!

• Скажите, пожалуйста... — Tell me, please...

• Как это по-русски? — How do you say this in Russian?

• Повторите, пожалуйста. — Repeat, please.

• Спасибо! — Thank you!

• Пожалуйста. — You’re welcome. / Here you go.

• Хорошего дня! — Have a nice day!

Greetings & Introductions

To start a conversation, you need a warm greeting:

• Здравствуйте! — Hello (formal and polite). Notice that the first “в” is silent, so it sounds like Здра-ствуй-те.

• Привет! — Hi (informal).

• Это... — This is... (e.g., This is Anna).

A quick grammar note: In Russian, there is no present tense verb for “to be” (am, is, are). Words connect directly to each other without a linking verb!

Asking and Stating Your Name

When asking or stating a name in Russian, we use the Accusative case. This is because the literal structure means “How do they call you?”

• Как тебя зовут? — What is your name?

  (тебя is the Accusative case)

• Меня зовут... — My name is...

  (меня is the Accusative case)

• А тебя? — And you?

  (Used to ask back for a name, keeping тебя in the Accusative case)

• Очень приятно! — Nice to meet you!

• Мне тоже приятно. — Nice to meet you too.

Stating Where You Are From

To talk about your origin, use the preposition из (from). Notice that the city or country name changes its ending to the Genitive case:

• Откуда ты? — Where are you from?

• Я из Лондона. — I am from London (Лондон ➔ из Лондона).

• Я из Москвы. — I am from Moscow (Москва ➔ из Москвы).

• А ты? — And you? (Notice we use “ты” here, as we are re-using the original question structure).

Forming Simple Yes / No Questions

In Russian, you don’t need to change the word order or add extra auxiliary verbs to ask a question like in English. You keep the sentence structure exact and simply raise your intonation at the end:

• Ты Алекс? — Are you Alex?

• Да, я Алекс. — Yes, I am Alex.

• Нет, я не из Лондона. Я из Парижа. — No, I am not from London. I am from Paris.

• Скажи́те по бу́квам, пожа́луйста — Could you please spell that?

• Вы не подска́жете, как добра́ться до...? — Could you tell me how to get to...?

• Вы не зна́ете, где нахо́дится...? — Do you know where... is?

• Как далеко́ до...? — How far is it to...?

• Вы мо́жете показа́ть мне на ка́рте? — Can you show me on the map?

• Я ищу́ э́тот а́дрес — I’m looking for this address

• Э́то сюда́ / Э́то туда́ — It’s this way / It’s that way

• Вы идёте не в ту́ сто́рону — You’re going the wrong way

• Поверни́те нале́во — Turn left

• Поверни́те напра́во — Turn right

• Иди́те пря́мо — Go straight ahead

• На перекрёстке поверни́те нале́во — Turn left at the crossroads

• Сле́ва от вас / Спра́ва от вас — On your left / On your right

• Пря́мо пе́ред ва́ми — Straight ahead of you

While assigning gender to inanimate objects might feel unusual at first, it shapes everything from adjectives to past-tense verbs. Best of all, you rarely need to memorize these genders by heart, because in most cases, the ending of the word quietly reveals it to you. Let’s take a look at how these patterns work.

Why Noun Gender Matters

Knowing the gender of a noun is essential for two main reasons:

1. It determines the forms of surrounding words

   The gender of a noun directly affects:

   • Pronouns: он (he), она (she), оно (it).

   • Adjectives: вкусный чай (masculine) / вкусная пицца (feminine) / вкусное яблоко (neuter).

   • Past Tense Verbs: Кот пил (masculine) / Кошка пила (feminine) / Солнце светило (neuter).

2. It helps you apply the correct case endings

   Russian cases change noun endings based on their gender. Knowing whether a word is masculine, feminine, or neuter makes mastering case patterns simple and logical.

Noun Endings: General Rules

Below is an overview of how these ending patterns work using fruit vocabulary:

Masculine

• бана́н — banana

• лимо́н — lemon

• апельси́н — orange

• пе́рсик — peach

• анана́с — pineapple

Feminine

• гру́ша — pear

• сли́ва — plum

• клубни́ка — strawberry

• мали́на — raspberry

• ви́шня — cherry

Neuter

• я́блоко — apple

• авока́до — avocado

• ма́нго — mango

• поме́ло — pomelo

• ки́ви — kiwi

Exceptions

While looking at word endings is the easiest way to determine gender, Russian has a few important exceptions to keep in mind!

• Male Family Members (-а / -я)

Words like па́па (dad), де́душка (grandfather), дя́дя (uncle), and мужчи́на (man) end in -а or -я, which usually indicates feminine nouns. However, because they refer to biological males, they are grammatically masculine. Adjectives and pronouns agree with them in the masculine form (e.g., мой добрый папа).

• The Famous Drink Exception

Even though ко́фе (coffee) ends in -е (which is normally a neuter ending), it is historically and grammatically masculine.

• Nouns Ending in Soft Sign (-ь)

The soft sign is a bit tricky because it can be either masculine or feminine. There is no universal rule here, so it is always best to check new words in a dictionary (I highly recommend OpenRussian.org). You can also memorize them together with their gender as you learn:

• Masculine: день (day), дождь (rain), гость (guest)

• Feminine: ночь (night), любо́вь (love), тетра́дь (notebook)

Grammar in Action: Subject & Pronoun Agreement

Here is how using personal pronouns (он, она, оно) works in everyday sentences:

Masculine (Он)

• Это бана́н. О́н лежи́т на столе́. (This is a banana. It is lying on the table.)

• Э́то лимо́н. Где о́н? (This is a lemon. Where is it?)

We use он because банан and лимон are masculine nouns.

Feminine (Она)

• Это гру́ша. Она́ о́чень сла́дкая! (This is a pear. It is very sweet!)

• Э́то сли́ва. Где она́? (This is a plum. Where is it?)

We use она́ because груша and слива are feminine nouns.

Neuter (Оно)

• Это я́блоко. Оно́ зелёное и спе́лое. (This is an apple. It is green and ripe.)

• Э́то авока́до. Где оно́? (This is an avocado. Where is it?)

We use оно́ because яблоко and авокадо are neuter nouns.

There is something so comforting about its simplicity. When you are just starting out, having a quiet, low-pressure structure is wonderful. You don’t have to worry about where to begin—it gently walks you through the basics:

• Warm greetings & soft farewells

• Sharing where you are from

• Talking about your family

• Ordering a warm cup of coffee in a café

However, after a while, many learners feel a bit stuck. The exercises start to feel repetitive, and it’s easy to catch yourself clicking through buttons passively without really connecting to the language on a deeper level.

Learning Russian shouldn’t feel like a hasty chore or a mechanical game. To help you bridge the gap between quick app lessons and meaningful, calm practice, I created a soft 3-step AI prompt routine. It’s a slow, thoughtful way to turn basic app vocabulary into real, cozy conversations.

Here is how you can gently build it into your study routine!

Step 1: Learning Words by Topic

When I used Duolingo for Italian, I really appreciated the clear order of the topics. However, it felt uncomfortable when the vocabulary was presented randomly and out of context, which made it hard to remember the words. To fix this, I prefer focusing on one topic at a time, such as Family or Fruits, and asking AI to organize a clean, structured vocabulary list for me first.

You can customize the bold words depending on your level or preferred topic.

When I first started studying Italian, my very first step was focusing on personal pronouns. For Russian learners, starting with personal pronouns in the nominative case gives you the ultimate foundation before moving on to other topics.

• Personal Pronouns in the Nominative Case

  я — I

  ты — you (informal)

  он — he

  она́ — she

  оно́ — it

  мы — we

  вы — you (formal or plural)

  они́ — they

After personal pronouns, I recommend picking a single essential verb. You can choose one that appears most frequently in your Duolingo lessons or one that you use most often in real life.

For me, that core verb was “to want” (хотеть). Mastering its conjugation early on gives you immediate power to express your desires and build real sentences.

• Conjugating "хотеть" (to want)

  я хочу́ — I want

  ты хо́чешь — you want (informal)

  он / она́ хо́чет — he / she wants

  мы хоти́м — we want

  вы хоти́те — you want (formal or plural)

  они́ хотя́т — they want

Step 2: Combining Vocabulary and Verbs into Active Practice

To lock these forms into your memory, I ask AI to generate a quick practice set that combines pronouns with the verb хотеть through fill in the blank exercises and short sentence building.

You can customize the bold words depending on your target language, current level, or the specific grammar topic you are practicing.

Here is a short exercise generated by AI using this exact prompt. Try filling in the blanks on your own first before checking the answer key below:

1. Я ________ говори́ть по-ру́сски. (I want to speak Russian.)

2. Они́ ________ чай. (They want tea.)

3. Мы ________ спать. (We want to sleep.)

4. Ты ________ ко́фе? (Do you want coffee?)

5. Она́ ________ рабо́тать. (She wants to work.)

Tip: Make sure to ask AI to include stress marks in all practice exercises, as correct accentuation is crucial for building accurate pronunciation right from the start.

Answers: 1 — хочу́, 2 — хотя́т, 3 — хоти́м, 4 — хо́чешь, 5 — хо́чет

Step 3: Putting Everything into Mini Dialogues & Context

Now that you have your vocabulary, a core verb, and a bit of grammar practice, it is time to bring it all to life. Learning isolated words is helpful, but seeing them in a natural conversation is what actually makes them click.

To do this, I ask AI to combine all the elements we just learned into short, simple daily dialogues.

You can adjust the bold words to practice different topics or grammar points.

Here is a quick dialogue generated using this prompt. Notice how easily all our learned elements come together:

Dialogue: A Simple Conversation

— Приве́т! Ты хо́чешь ча́ю? (Hi! Do you want tea?)

Teacher’s Advice: How to Structure Your First Lessons

As a language teacher, my main recommendation for absolute beginners is to keep things light and practical at the very start.

For your first 1 to 5 lessons, focus purely on learning thematic vocabulary blocks paired with high-frequency verbs.

Start with essential daily topics such as:

• Greetings and Polite Phrases (Приветствие и вежливые слова)

• Family (Семья)

• Fruits and Food (Фрукты и еда)

• Colors (Цвета)

• Daily Routines, Time, and Numbers (Распорядок дня, время и числа)

• Transport and Directions (Транспорт и навигация)

Build simple phrases, listen to native sounds, and get comfortable with the rhythm of the language without stressing over complex rules.

Once you have built a comfortable foundation of core words and basic actions, you can start diving deeper into formal grammar. At that point, grammar will not feel overwhelming because you will simply be connecting the vocabulary you already know into richer, more natural sentences.

Learning Russian doesn’t always require hours of heavy textbook drills or complex tables. Often, it’s the consistent micro-doses integrated into your quietest moments that build real confidence.

Here is a 5-step morning practice you can follow while sipping your morning coffee or tea.

1. Word of the Day

Open a dictionary or your language app and select just one single word. Don’t try to memorize ten terms at once; focus entirely on one. Say it out loud three times, feel how it sounds, and then build three simple, progressive sentences with it to see how it functions in context.

Let’s take the essential morning word: ко́фе (coffee).

• Э́то ко́фе. — This is coffee.

  (A simple, foundational structure using “Это” / “This is”).

• Ко́фе горя́чий. — The coffee is hot.

  (Notice how the adjective “горячий” describes the coffee).

• Я люблю́ ко́фе. — I love coffee.

  (A classic sentence pattern using “Я люблю” / “I love” followed by an object).

A Little Note:

In formal Russian grammar, ко́фе is historically masculine (он), which is why we say горячий кофе (hot coffee) instead of горячее кофе. Knowing this small detail will instantly make your Russian sound more natural and refined!

2. What Do I See?

Look around your kitchen table, your desk, or out your bedroom window. Without rushing, identify 5 physical objects around you and name them in Russian. If you don’t know a word, treat it as a delightful excuse to look it up.

Here is a sample vocabulary list for a quiet morning space:

• стол — table / desk

  Example: Э́то мой стол. — This is my table.

• окно́ — window

  Example: Большо́е окно́. — A big window.

• ча́шка — cup / mug

  Example: Ча́шка ча́я. — A cup of tea.

• ко́шка — cat

  Example: Ко́шка спит. — The cat is sleeping.

• телефо́н — phone

  Example: Телефо́н молчи́т. — The phone is silent.

3. Plans for the Day

Instead of letting a long to-do list overwhelm you, write down 3 peaceful, simple intentions for your day in Russian.

You can use the basic pattern «Я хочу…» (I want…) followed by an action, or simply write down the infinitive form of the verb.

• пить ко́фе. — to drink coffee.

  Full phrase: Я хочу́ пить ко́фе. — I want to drink coffee.

• рабо́тать. — to work.

  Full phrase: Сего́дня я бу́ду рабо́тать. — Today I will work.

• смотре́ть фильм. — to watch a movie.

  Full phrase: Ве́чером я хочу́ смотре́ть фильм. — In the evening I want to watch a movie.

4. Weather Check

Step over to your window, take a deep breath, and describe what you see outside in two short, descriptive phrases. This grounds you in the present moment while practicing basic descriptive grammar.

• Сего́дня со́лнце. — Today it is sunny.

• Сего́дня идёт дождь. — Today it is raining.

• Сего́дня тепло́. — Today it is warm.

• Сего́дня ти́хо. — Today it is quiet/peaceful.

5. Theme of Five

Pick one simple category (Food, House, Nature, Feelings) and write down 5 words connected to it. This rapid association exercise strengthens your brain’s ability to retrieve thematic vocabulary effortlessly.

Let’s take Еда (Food) as our morning topic:

1. я́блоко — apple

   Context: Све́жее я́блоко. — A fresh apple.

2. хлеб — bread

   Context: Вку́сный хлеб. — Delicious bread.

3. сыр — cheese

   Context: Кусо́к сы́ра. — A piece of cheese.

4. яйцо́ — egg

   Context: Одно́ яйцо́. — One egg.

5. молоко́ — milk

   Context: Молоко́ и ко́фе. — Milk and coffee.
